The short answer
Pick the agency that can show you real results for businesses like yours, explains exactly what they'll do each month, and doesn't need a 12-month contract to keep you around.
Everything else is decoration.
9 checks before you sign anything
1. Can they show real work?
Not mockups. Not "concepts." Live websites you can click, campaigns that actually ran, and clients you could call.
2. Are the reviews real?
Look at their Google reviews, not the hand-picked quotes on their homepage. Are there names? Details? Recent dates?
3. Do they ask about your numbers?
A good agency asks about revenue, average job value, close rate and capacity before they pitch anything. If they jump straight to "packages," they're selling, not diagnosing.
4. Can they explain the plan in plain English?
If you leave the call confused, that's not because marketing is complicated.
It's because they wanted you confused.
5. Who actually does the work?
Ask who your point of contact is and who does the work. Some agencies sell senior and deliver junior (or overseas freelancers).
6. What do you own?
Your domain, your website, your ad accounts and your analytics should be in your name. Always. If they leave, everything stays with you.
7. What does reporting look like?
Ask to see a sample report. You want leads, calls, cost per lead and revenue impact, not a wall of "impressions."
8. How long is the contract?
Long contracts protect the agency, not you. A confident agency earns the next month.
9. What happens in the first 90 days?
They should be able to say what gets built, launched and measured. Vague answers now become vague invoices later.
Questions to ask on the first call
- What would you change first, and why?
- What results did you get for a business our size?
- Who owns the accounts and the website?
- How do you measure success, and how often will we talk?
- What happens if it doesn't work?
Red flags
- Guaranteed #1 rankings on Google.
- "Proprietary" methods they can't explain.
- Reports full of vanity metrics.
- Locking up your ad accounts or domain.
- Pressure to sign today.
