11 Red Flags in a Marketing Agency Proposal

11 Red Flags in a Marketing Agency Proposal

    The short answer

If a proposal is vague about what gets done, who owns it and how success is measured, it's a bad proposal. Doesn't matter how nice the PDF looks.

    The 11 red flags

    1. Deliverables you can't picture

"Ongoing optimization" and "brand elevation" aren't deliverables. Pages, campaigns, posts and reports are.

    2. No goal tied to money

If there's no target for leads, calls or revenue, there's no way to tell whether it's working.

    3. Guarantees about Google rankings

Nobody controls Google. Anyone guaranteeing #1 is guessing or lying.

    4. They own your accounts

Ad accounts, analytics, domain and website should be in your name. Full stop.

    5. Long lock-in contracts

A 12-month contract with an early-exit fee means they're not confident they'll earn month two.

    6. Setup fees with no explanation

Setup can be legit. Ask what it buys you, line by line.

    7. Ad spend mixed with the agency fee

You should see exactly how much goes to Google or Meta and how much goes to the agency.

    8. No reporting sample

Ask for one. If they can't show you, you'll never get a useful one.

    9. One-size-fits-all packages

"Gold, Silver, Bronze" usually means they sell the same thing to everyone.

    10. No mention of your website

Ads and SEO send people to your site. If nobody looked at whether it converts, you'll pay to send traffic into a leaky bucket.

    11. Pressure to sign fast

"This price expires Friday" is a sales tactic, not a strategy.

    What a good proposal includes

    • A short diagnosis of what's broken now.
    • Specific deliverables with timelines.
    • A measurable goal.
    • Clear pricing split from ad spend.
    • Ownership terms in your favor.
    • What happens if it doesn't work.

    FAQ

Is a setup fee a red flag?

Not by itself. An unexplained one is.

Should an agency proposal include ad spend?

It should estimate ad spend separately from the agency's fee.

What if I already signed a bad contract?

Read the exit terms, confirm you have admin access to every account, and get your data exported before you give notice.
